One of the special parts of visiting Winter’s Hill at this time of year is that you can see the harvest and winemaking activities. There are lots of tractors, pumps, barrels and tanks full of wine. We appreciate all of the questions we get, because if you haven’t noticed yet, winemakers loooove talking about their wines!

Here are four of the most common questions we get:

Is this the only time of year that you harvest?
Yes, all of our wines come from our own vineyards, and the vines only produce one crop per year.

How long does it take to harvest your vineyard?
Usually about 3 weeks, but each year is different. We don’t start picking, then continue every day until everything is picked. In order to harvest each block at optimum ripeness, we’ll usually pick for a few days, then wait a few days until the next block is ready. This year, we are seeing more difference than usual between the blocks, so we are waiting more than a week until we harvest the rest of our fruit.

How many people does it take to harvest the fruit?
Most of our vines are picked by hand, and we usually have 6-10 people picking, with two people driving the tractors.

When will this year’s harvest be ready to drink?
Our Rosé of Pinot noir will be ready next February, but most of our wines age for about one year in barrel, then another year in bottle before they are released.
