The buds are “breaking” and people, animals, and tractors are all busy in the vines. After months of dormancy, we are always excited to see the vines begin to grow in the spring. We call that first burst of growth “bud break,” as the buds do seem to break open and expand the first tiny leaves in just a matter of days. If you look closely, you can see the miniature clusters of grapes beginning to expand as well.
Along with the vines, everything else is growing as well. This spring we have gotten an assist from several hundred sheep to mow the grass and clover between the rows and under the vines. Once they have eaten the majority, it is easier for Luciano to make the first cultivation pass under the vines. We use a 16 inch blade to make a shallow cut 2-3 inches below the surface, cutting the roots of the weeds and grass. This takes time, and most importantly, a very skilled tractor operator to avoid damage to the vines. The payoff for this extra work comes in improved soil health and biodiversity in the vineyard.
We have not used any herbicides in the vineyard for more than 5 years and we are excited about the benefits that we are seeing in the vineyard and in the wines.
Cheers!
Russell
