Pinot noir clusters on the vine in version at Winter's Hill Estate in Dayton, Oregon

Purple Grapes are the Indicator

Although the vines bloomed back in June, the grapes remain green, hard, and BB sized through the summer. Only at the end of the season do they change color and grow in both size and sweetness. The rapidity of Veraison, as we call that transformation, always gets me excited for the approaching harvest.

More Changes in the Upcoming Weeks

Last week we saw a few purple berries in each cluster. Now there are more than 85% complete, and by next week the Pinot noir will be fully purple turning to almost black.

We’ll also begin sampling the vineyard next week for sugar, acidity, and (most importantly) flavor. All of this is in anticipation of harvest beginning at the end of September. The team and I are getting ready!
