A bee on a flower

Of course, it’s not that simple, but letting more flowers bloom in your yard does provide valuable forage and habitat for bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. Around the world, people are embracing No Mow May as a way to educate people about the steps we can take to reduce our impact on the environment around us.

At Winter’s Hill, Alternate Mowing is one technique that we have used for many years.  Rather than mowing the entire vineyard at once, we mow every second or third row.  A week or two later, we come back to mow the rows that we skipped the first time. That way there are always flowering plants and taller grass in the vineyard to provide habitat.

By maintaining that habitat, we attract and preserve the beneficial insects that play an important role in our vineyard.  It might seem “messy” at first glance, but it’s all part of the way we create delicious wine for you to enjoy!
