In the mature vineyards, we have removed more than 90% of last year’s growth, selecting 2-4 canes to grow and provide the fruit for this years vintage.
The other branches are pulled into the row where they will be chopped and allowed to decompose into the soil.
In the new planting, the top priority is to develop a strong trunk which will support the vine over many years.
In this photo you can see the excellent growth from last season is securely tied onto the metal stake.
Every year we lose some vines to disease, animal damage, or “tractor blight”. This is the season when we replace those vines with a new plant.
Look closely and you can see the composted grape skins and seeds that we spread around the new plants to provide some extra nutrition.
