Winter’s Hill has been crafting Rosé for so many years, that when someone asked me why we started, it took me a minute to remember.

Like so many other questions, the answer goes back to our vineyard. We are proud that all of our wines come from our own vineyards in the Dundee Hills. However, that does put some limits on the kind of wines we can produce.

In 1990, we planted Pinot noir and Pinot gris to establish our original vineyard. When we released our first wines in 1999, those were the only two wines we had to offer. To expand our offerings, we had to work with our existing vines. We decided to offer a crisp, dry Rosé that would pair well with food, but we were worried that many consumers expected any pink wine to be sweet. We labeled our first vintages “Dry Rosé” to be sure that our customers knew what to expect.

Looking back, it’s hard to remember how difficult it was to convince a restauranteur to put just one Rosé on their list. Now, your favorite café likely offers several, including one created by your favorite celebrity.

Cheers to Rosé all day!
